The Kindle 2 from Amazon is described as the next generation wireless reading device, however what does this new version offer readers?
Love them or hate them, electronic or digital reading devices are here to stay. Lovers of the concept enthuse over the ease of use and the ability to store and read hundreds of books on a single device. Detractors bemoan the quality of the reading experience and the loss of 'real' books.
New generation reading devices, such as the Kindle 2, continue to develop the concept and offer new features to excite fans and perhaps win over some new users.
The Amazon Kindle
The Amazon Kindle is one of the most well known wireless reading devices. It enables readers to store and read books, employing useful features such as automatic page turning and a back lit screen. Readers can choose books from an extensive and ever growing range as well as access blogs, magazines and newspapers.
Ebooks are downloaded from the Amazon website and most books are typically downloaded in less than one minute. There is no Internet fee for downloading books (the system utilizes Amazon Whispernet to provide U.S wireless coverage via Sprint's 3G high-speed data network) and Amazon covers the cost of the wireless connection. Kindle formated ebooks are competitively priced and there is a wide selection to choose from.
The new version, launched in February 2009, has some new features that will extend the appeal of this device.
Features of the Kindle 2 From Amazon
Some of the features of the new Kindle wireless reading device are:
* With over seven times the storage capacity of the original Kindle, the Kindle 2 will hold over 1500 books. This gives plenty of scope for readers to store extensive book collections.
* The new Kindle has an improved battery life. The new version can be read for several days without recharging.
* This version comes with 'Read to Me', a text to speech function, that will allow books to be 'read' out loud to the reader. This in effect turns ebooks into digitally read audiobooks.
* The speed of the page turner has been increased by 20 percent. This is useful for fast readers or people who are browsing for information.
* The screen has been enhanced to include 16 different shades of gray. This improves the clarity and makes the screen easier to read.
Buying the Kindle 2
The Kindle 2 is only available from Amazon and it can be purchased from the Amazon Kindle Store. Books, magazines and other items for download to the Kindle can also be found at this part of the website. The Kindle Store also offers other facilities such as a discussion board, reviews, help and advice and information for writers looking to publish their books in a Kindle format.
The Kindle 2 offers some new and exciting features and this is likely to be just one of many future updates and new releases.
